Pura Gunung Kawi: Ancient Royal Tombs Carved in Stone Guide

Discover the awe-inspiring Pura Gunung Kawi, an 11th-century temple complex located near Tampaksiring, Gianyar. This unique site features ten rock-cut shrines (candi) carved into the face of a cliff, believed to be memorials to members of the Balinese royalty. The stunning setting amidst lush rice paddies and the tranquil Pakerisan River creates a truly unforgettable experience. Prepare for a journey back in time as you explore this ancient and sacred place. Pura Gunung Kawi's history is shrouded in some mystery, but it is generally believed to have been built during the reign of King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana Dynasty in the 11th century. The ten candi are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu, his queens, and other members of the royal family. The carvings are remarkably well-preserved, showcasing the skill and artistry of the ancient Balinese craftsmen. The complex is divided into two main sections, separated by the Pakerisan River, adding to its mystical atmosphere. Visitors to Pura Gunung Kawi can explore the temple complex, marvel at the towering rock-cut shrines, and learn about the history and legends associated with the site. Be prepared for a descent of several hundred steps to reach the temple, but the breathtaking views along the way are well worth the effort. Remember to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) when visiting the temple. The surrounding rice paddies offer a picturesque backdrop for photos. Local vendors sell souvenirs and refreshments near the entrance. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly linked to the temple, nearby warungs offer traditional Balinese cuisine.
